Plan Ahead - Minimize Stress - Stay Positive!

The importance of planning ahead can't be stressed enough. That's a single most-important thing to do to avoid a nightmare on a move day.

The following moving tips will reduce the stress, help you stay positive, and can serve as a good planning guide for your upcoming move.

  • Talk to your mover about insurance coverage. Standard insurance, usually $0.60 per pound, should be included in the price and there should be no charge for it.
  • Compare apples to apples: Some movers will give you a flat rate, some - "not to exceed" estimates, yet most popular structure will be hourly rate. Make sure you understand the differences between pricing structures before committing to a moving company.
  • Inquire about cancellation policy in case your plans fall through.
  • Always ask for a name and phone number of the person who will be your primary contact on the move day.
  • Ask your mover if they charge for heavy/bulky items, such as pianos, pool tables, etc., if you have any. Also, don't forget to find out charges, if any, for flights of stairs, and other charges of similar kind.
  • Moving is usually less expensive during weekdays. Avoid moving at the beginning or end of the month, or on weekends. If not possible, ask your mover about prices for different days of the month.
  • If you're given an hourly rate, when does the time start - when they leave their terminal, or when they start working at your residence? When does time end? What is the minimum of hours (if you have a really small move)?
  • How do they charge for moving supplies? Do they offer packing/unpacking services, if that's something you are interested in?
  • The earlier you secure a date and time with a moving company of your choice, the better chances you have to get a time slot that works best for you. Book a mover 2-4 weeks in advance, if possible.
  • When packing, use separate boxes for each room: This will help avoid chaos during unpacking process.
  • Place heavier items in smaller boxes. Lighter items can go to larger boxes.
  • Have assembly instructions for your furniture/appliances ready.
  • When packing, stack dishes upwards.
  • Do not place important documents and valuables in boxes. Carry them yourself.
  • Be careful if your purchase used boxes as they can break easier than new ones.
  • Label moving boxes.
  • Use packing tape as opposed to duct tape.
  • If possible, pack your electronics in their original boxes.
  • Usually local/state and/or federal laws prohibit moving companies from accepting certain hazardous and/or explosive items, such as gas tanks, gasoline, explosives and ammunition.
  • Pack a box with things that you use on a daily basis, and will need them right after the move. Consider transporting the box yourself.
  • Use special boxes to protect fine china and clothes.

Most importantly, stay positive throughout the process, no matter how dreadful it seems at the moment.
